Camp America

I was responsible for the safety, wellbeing and development of 13 girls aged 9–11 in a 24-hour residential role. This required strong communication, leadership and responsibility, as well as the ability to provide emotional support and create a positive environment for the children.

Alongside my role as a counsellor, I worked across a range of programme areas including high ropes, climbing, volleyball, arts and crafts and stained glass. I was trained as a high ropes instructor, where safety, risk awareness and clear communication were essential. I also led and organised activities for the children, particularly STEM-based activities, encouraging them to explore problem-solving and creativity through hands-on experiences.

Working with stained glass also gave me practical experience with soldering, developing my confidence with tools, materials and hands-on making. The experience strengthened my leadership, communication and organisational skills while teaching me how to adapt activities to different abilities and encourage children to try new things.
